This guide provides information on locating articles, books, doctoral dissertations, and master's theses.  


  • How do I find articles available through Holy Spirit Library? Scholarly, popular, and newspaper articles are available through the library's databases.   Select the databases link from the library's homepage ( to locate articles.
  • How do I find books and ebooks?  Cavalog--the library's catalog provides access to print book records and ebooks. Select the Cavalog link from the library's homepage (   
  • What is a dissertation? A dissertation is a book length treatise prepared as a requirement for a doctoral degree (PhD, DBA, EdD, OD). It explains the purpose, the methods, and the findings of the research project with supporting literature review and bibliography.
  • What is a thesis? A thesis is a book length treatise prepared as a requirement for a master's degree (MSL, MEd, MA).
  • Why use a dissertation?  Dissertations can be useful for locating recent research that may not yet be published.  Revised dissertations are often published as books (monographs) or as articles in scholarly journals. 
  • What is ETD? ETD is the abbreviation for Electronic Thesis Dissertation.  An ETD is a digital version of a thesis or dissertation. An ETD is formatted just like a traditional thesis or dissertation (with pagination, tables, figures, references, etc.), but is saved as a PDF file and submitted electronically to the university.
