A guide for using Kahoot! as a teaching tool in the library classroom


Why Use it?

1. Teaching tool: Use Kahoot questions to teach a lesson, stopping to discuss each question as you move through the quiz

   Spend more/less time depending on student responses. 

   Allows you to gently draw attention to common mistakes/pitfalls 

   Can easily move between the quiz and other applications 

   Questions are timed, but the quiz is not...

2. Assessment: Use Kahoot questions to assess student learning or students' knowledge of a topic 

   Pre-test to gauge student's knowledge of a topic, strengths and weaknesses going in...

   Post-test to gauge student learning, strengths and weaknesses coming out... 

  Can download data and compare classes or combine 

   Kahoot quizzes can be easily shared or a joint account can be created 

3. Engagement: Use kahoot questions to foster conversation and make connections

   Works well as a "warm up" or a "wrap up" 

   Whole class participation 

   Use questions to foster debate in a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere 

   Easy way to get feedback 

   Accessible, quick learning curve - many students are already familiar with it 

  Can be played individually or in teams 


Best Practices and Tips

Keeping it Fun

  • Be prepared for the music - gets really old, really quick
  • 20 seconds is generally plenty of time per question 
  • Avoid making just one answer a wrong answer 
  • Respect the character limits, short and simple questions work best 
  • Preview before you go live

Using Images

  • If you HAVE to make a question longer create an image with the question as a work around 
  • Clip art works well, may have to "compress" some images to make them smaller 

Data Collection

  • Make separate "pre" and "post" tests for data collection
  • Download the results before you close out the game
  • If you want to know how individuals did, ask students to use their real names

Classroom Management

  • If you think it might be necessary, remind students to choose names that are appropriate for the classroom
  • Remind students to put phones away when quiz is over
  • Consider letting students come up with their own questions or make their own quizzes
