Sampling, Not Stealing

Working with sources is a little like "sampling" in the recording industry. Sampling done well is transformative, and when you write a researched paper, you use the ideas, theories, and arguments of others to create your own "masterpiece". As in the world of music, when you "sample" in your writing you want to do so in ways that respect the original source and that do not result in you getting in trouble. Giving credit, citing correctly, and representing your source as authentically as you can are all ways to "sample" well in your writing.
