APA Citation Style -- Some Examples

The following are some basic examples of citation using APA style.  For more information consult the style guides or the cheat sheet to the right.

In-text citation, paraphrase from book:

Calfee suggested preparing manuscripts by going through an advanced editing process first (Calfee, 1991, p. 155).

Reference entry, book:

Calfee, R. C., & Valencia, R. R. (1991). APA guide to preparing manuscripts for journal publication. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.

In-text citation, paraphrase from book chapter:

According to O’Neil, the development from assigned gender role to natural gender role is a good tool for assessing the general public’s struggle with sexism. (1992, p. 170).

Reference entry, book chapter:

O'Neil, J. M. (1992). Men's and women's gender role journeys: A metaphor for healing, transition, and transformation. In B. R. Wainrib (Ed.), Gender issues across the life cycle (pp. 107-123). New York, NY: Springer.

In-text citation, excerpt from journal article:

New approaches to mass media began in earnest when “the Web’s aura of empowerment and control also cast shadows on old media.” (Heuman, 2011, p. 32)

Reference entry, journal article (from online database):
